Ruth Medjber

Photographer

Dublin-born and globally based Ruth Medjber was encouraged by her father to take photographs from a young age. Her portfolio includes portraits of Grace Jones, Hozier, Metallica and the Foo Fighters. Most recently, she documented Arcade of fire on their tour of the UK and Europe, as well as covering the Glastonbury Festival for the BBC. In 2020, when the music industry was paused by Covid-19, Ruth began taking portraits of people at home through their windows in a series titled Twilight Together: Portraits of Ireland at Home. This body of work, now published as a book by Penguin, became one of the most iconic portrait series of our time.

 Some teacher reflection questions

Q. “When you know you know” is a firm mantra that Ruth uses to describe capturing a specific moment on camera. Is this a mantra that feeds into your own creative process?

Q. Are there any photographers that have inspired you or captured your imagination?

Q. Ruth states that “everybody takes inspiration from art.” Would you agree? How do you take inspiration from art?

Q. Ruth talks about going to galleries to escape and generate ideas. Where do you escape to when looking for ‘a safe space’ for creativity?

Q. Ruth talks about the power of Instagram to showcase her work but also her personal Instagram account as a place where her only followers are those who she could invite into her home and “have a cup of tea with.” Do you currently use the platform and how do you manage your interaction with it?
